Man charged after explosive devices found inside vehicle in JCC

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A man is facing charges after two explosive devices were found in a vehicle in the Mirror Lakes subdivision of James City County on Friday, authorities say.

JCC officials say the explosive devices were found in the vehicle’s trunk, and one was complete and the other was incomplete. The Newport News Fire Department’s Bomb Disposal Unit was able to disarm both without incident, police say. 

Fire and rescue crews were dispatched to the scene shortly after 10 a.m., and were still at the scene into the late afternoon. County fire officials said in a news release the area was closed off in a one-block radius from the 200 block of Loch Haven Drive. 

Officials say that 30-year-old Adam Helms, who residence in a home on the street, is in custody, and there’s no danger to people or property in the area. 

Helms was charged with manufacturing an explosive device and possessing a firearm.
