NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Authorities have arrested a 60-year-old man in connection to a series of recent armed robberies at Norfolk pharmacies.
Johnnie N. Jones, of the 800 block of Tifton Street, was found Monday after officers located his vehicle in the 800 block of E. Little Creek Road. This all happened shortly after police say he robbed the 810 W. 21st Street Walgreens in Ghent on Monday.
After police surrounded the area in the 800 block of E. Little Creek, Jones was found in a nearby business and taken into custody without incident.
Police say he’s behind an armed robbery at a Walgreens at 115 West Little Creek Road in addition to the W. 21st location, and one at a CVS Pharmacy on 972 E. Little Creek Road. All three happened in just over 24 hours.
He also tried to rob a CVS at 3200 Lafayette Boulevard, but was unsuccessful, police say.
On Tuesday, 10 On Your Side interviewed Jones while in jail. Jones confessed to the crime, saying he is guilty of “a couple of them.”
He went on to say he did it because of his financial situation. Jones said he has health problems and his sister does as well.
“I was trying to be the heroic one I guess, but it doesn’t seem so heroic now,” said Jones. “I was never intending to make this a career endeavor, that was my never my intention. I was just attempting to get the bills in line and keep my vehicle to assist my brother-in-law and assist my bed-ridden sister.”
He calls himself disabled, suffering from six heart attacks, he says he relies on four stints and a defibrillator. Jones says he regrets what he did.
“I’d take a cup and panhandle out of 7-11 instead of taking such a drastic move like I did yesterday,” said Jones. “If I get anything more than 5 or 7 years it’s pretty much like a life sentence at my age. My goal now is not to die in prison.”
Jones has been been charged with three counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery, four counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony and eluding police.
He’s being held at the Norfolk City Jail.
