NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police have arrested a man in connection to the July 26 murder of 31-year-old Javon Stephenson of Virginia Beach.

Newport News police say 34-year-old Damontaze Montrell Tillery of Newport News was taken into custody and charged with second degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Police were called to the 600 block of 19th Street near Ivy Avenue for reports of a vehicle fire just before 10 p.m. that night. While they were on the way, they learned the incident involved a gunshot victim.

When police arrived, they found Stephenson inside a vehicle with several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the incident never involved a fire. They believe the person who called in the fire may have seen smoke near the car as a result of a tire burnout. However, police say there was no evidence of street racing.
