NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News man is facing charges for allegedly assaulting police officers earlier this week.

Police said officers responded to a domestic call at a home in the the 100 block of Poplar Avenue around 2:40 p.m. Monday.

Officers spoke with a 61-year-old man, who claimed he had asked his son to leave his property but refused.

Police said the man’s son, 27-year-old Alton Thomas, told officers he needed to get something from inside the home. After he retrieved some of his property, officers told Thomas he needed to leave or he would be arrested for trespassing.

Police said Thomas refused to leave.

Officers tried to take Thomas into custody, the 27-year-old started swinging at them. One officer was cut above the eye.

Thomas was eventually taken into custody. He allegedly kicked the door of the officer’s cruiser as he was being placed inside, causing damage.

Police charged Thomas with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, unlawful damage, trespassing and obstruction of justice.
