VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach-based Coast Guard crew seized a total of $44 million worth of cocaine during its latest deployment.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said in a news release the Cutter Dependable returned home Monday following a deployment that lasted 59 days.

During that time, the Dependable’s crew intercepted a vessel off the coast of Mexico that was fitted to smuggle contraband, officials said. More than 1,200 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated $18 million were seized from the vessel.

Officials said the Dependable’s embarked Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron helped disrupt a drug smuggling operation, leading to more than 1,600 pounds of cocaine — worth an estimated $25 million — being seized.

That cocaine was intended to be delivered to Mexico, officials said.

The Dependable traveled as far south as the Galapagos Islands and as far west as Acapulco, Mexico, during the deployment, sailing 12,904 miles in total.
