Virginia Beach Police announce passing of ‘accomplished’ K9 Rex

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its K9 officers. 

Police said in a news release K9 Rex died on Wednesday, May 8.

Rex started working with his partner Det. Kagel in 2008. Police said they helped seize hundreds of pounds of marijuana, several kilos of cocaine, heroin, and more than $2.6 million dollars during their 10-year partnership

Police said Rex received an award from the U.S. Attorneys Office for high-profile investigation work. 

A memorial service will be held for Rex on Friday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The memorial is located at 35th Street and the boardwalk.
