VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The successful music fest Something in the Water, spearheaded by Virginia Beach native son Pharrell Williams, seems to have set the tone for a positive holiday weekend for Oceanfront businesses.
“We’ve had a great May, and Something in the Water was fantastic,” said Jimmy Capps, owner of the Breakers Hotel and Resort. “We are getting off to a really great start and this weekend should be no exception.”
Shasta Shreve manages the Subway restaurant on Atlantic Ave. near 16th Street. She says in previous years’ shootings, fighting, and other incidents hurt her business, but now there’s a much more positive vibe.
“I think we’re gonna be really busy, our numbers are already up.”
The folks at Fun Park see their business rising, too. The manager says tomorrow’s forecast of good weather and temps in the 70s is perfect.
“We are really hoping for one of the busiest weekends in a while,” said Kevin Brian. “The hotels said they’re packed, the campground said they are packed, so we’re in good shape.”
Kaylee Stout is visiting from Iowa because her son is a wrestler. Teams from all across the country are competing this weekend at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Maybe not a typical holiday tourist, but for local businesses, it all adds up.
“I brought some cash and I have my credit card,” Stout said.
Capps had just a couple rooms left at noon Friday but he was confident they’d be gone by nightfall.
“The weather is good, the bookings are up, it’s the opening of the season, and everybody’s excited about it.”
