Man reportedly armed with 'large knife' shot, killed by Va. Beach officer

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- A man who was reportedly armed with a "large knife" was shot and killed by a Virginia Beach Police officer after several hours of negotiating with him Saturday morning, police say.

Virginia Beach Police said officers were originally called to the 5700 block of Paiute Road around 11 a.m. because the man was trying to harm himself with the knife.

After several hours of negotiating with the man, police said he eventually put down the knife. That's when one of the officers at the scene attempted to engage with the man.

Police said the man picked the knife back up and approached one of the officers in a "threatening manner."

Another officer shot the man, according to police.

Police said the officers immediately took the knife away from the man and rendered first aid. He was then transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and police say he later died.

The man was later identified as 57-years-old Jeffrey D. Tyree, of Virginia Beach.

No officers were injured.

Officials said there is a three-tier investigation being conducted by the department's Internal Affairs Office, the police department's Homicide Unit and the Office of Commonwealth's Attorney Colin Stolle.

Neighbors told 10 On Your Side the family has never given them any issues.

"The officer doing most of the talking was obviously, seemed obvious, was a crisis negotiation officer. They spent most of her time talking to him, got him some cigarettes, got him a soda," said neighbor and alleged witness Mike Ferris

"He was irate and waving a knife and talking in a way that just didn't make sense. He obviously really had some issues going on. He was not himself," explained Ferris.

Another neighbor, who did not want to be identified, told 10 On Your Side, "We've been here 24 years and they've been excellent neighbors, excellent neighbors."
