VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A shocking discovery in the water has Virginia Beach police looking for answers.
Rescue crews pulled the body of a man from a retention pond Monday morning off Virginia Beach Boulevard near the westbound lanes of I-264.
There’s no word yet on who this person might be.
The peaceful views of the retention pond were replaced by yellow tape and search crews Monday morning.
Virginia Beach Police, Fire, and Marine Rescue rushed to the scene after getting a concerning call about a possible drowning.
“About 8:25 this morning, a citizen called and reported they saw what they believed to be a body floating in the water,” said MPO Linda Keuhn, with the Virginia Beach Police Department.
Crews put a boat in the water and just after 10 a.m., about an hour and a half after that initial call, first responders found the body of a man.
“The fire department was here with their marine vessels a lot quicker than we could get the police vessels here, so they assisted in the recovery process,” Keuhn said.
Police are working to identify the man, but it’s not clear how old he was or how long he may have been in the water.
“We’re trying to identify this person and obtain facts,” Keuhn said.
A forensics team stayed on scene gathering any possible evidence on the ground while a drone looked for clues from the air.
Police told 10 On Your Side they’re trying to figure out how and why the man ended up in the pond.
“It’s not a lake, as such. It’s a man-made body of water,” Keuhn said. “I’m not sure it’s something that people would typically go to. It’s not a beach. They wouldn’t typically go for recreation purposes.”
This case is classified as a death investigation. If you have any information that might help police, give them a call.
