VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man convicted of shooting and killing a woman in Virginia Beach in 2017 is facing over two decades in prison.

A judge on Tuesday formally sentenced Richard Jerome Gregory Jr. to 21 years, which is what jurors recommended following a five-day trial in 2018.

Gregory was found guilty of murdering Erica Alford after the two met for a drug deal at the Mayfair Apartments. The meeting led to an exchange of gunfire that left Alford dead and Gregory wounded.

A friend who had accompanied Alford to the deal ran to a nearby 7-Eleven after the shooting and called 911 from a borrowed phone.

Gregory has six prior convictions for possession of marijuana.
