VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A former Virginia Beach family is mourning the loss of two of their children.
22-year-old Antoinette McCoy and her brother 15-year-old Sean Banks were killed in a head-on car crash over the weekend.
10 On Your Side spoke with their parents via FaceTiime.
“They are the best two people that I know in this whole world,” said Davisa Banks, their mother. “Bittersweet that they had to leave this earth, but they left together.”
The crash happened early Saturday morning. Florida Highway Patrol says 25-year-old Hunter Black crossed into their lane and hit Antoinette and Sean head-on. He was arrested for two counts of DUI manslaughter.
The Florida community has rallied around the family, with a memorial at the crash site and a tribute at Sean’s basketball game
“As the days have passed, you know, just the outreach and the love and support that the community has shown, it numbed the pain,” said Earl Banks, their father.
The family has only been in Florida for a few years. Before that, they were in Virginia Beach.
Antoinette attended First Colonial High School. Sean attended Pembroke Elementary and Independence middle schools.
Earl and Davisa say the love and support from communities in both Florida and Virginia have helped ease the pain.
“Everyone’s lives that my children touched are now my family down here,” Davisa said. “I feel that I have an abundance of family down here, when two years when I came down here, I didn’t have anyone, its very, very moving.”
