Emergency dredging underway at Rudee Inlet

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Emergency dredging is underway in the shoaled area outside Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach.

Shoaling is when surface waves move towards shallow water, such as a beach. This can make the inlet more shallow, keeping larger boats from getting through.

Crews are working around the clock until the shoaling condition is resolved, although they had to temporarily stop the work Monday morning because of the high tide, according to Public Works spokesperson Drew Lankford.

Virginia Beach Public Works is asking boaters to keep a safe distance from the dredge and other equipment.

Crews also have heavy equipment on the beach in this area, so tourists and visitors should stay out of the marked area.

Here’s a look at the sea conditions over the next two days.
