College Beach Weekend wraps up at the Oceanfront, stats being released

News

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — College Beach Weekend is coming to a close at the Oceanfront and officials are beginning to release some preliminary statistics.

As of Sunday morning at approximately 3:15 a.m., there were a total of 43 physical arrests, according to Virginia Beach officials. Last year, officials reported 30 arrests during College Beach Weekend and in 2016 there were 65 arrests.

Law enforcement and city officials have been monitoring the events on ground and by air, utilizing their helicopter and drone.

Police responded to a handful of shootings over the course of the weekend. A man and a woman were seriously injured early Sunday morning after police said they were shot on Pacific Avenue.

Another woman was shot in the neck on the boardwalk, off 20th Street.

City Manager Dave Hansen tells 10 On Your Side the crowds weren’t as large as they were last year.

They estimated 40,000 people were going to be at the Oceanfront throughout the weekend, but the preliminary numbers state there were around 20,000 total for this year.

Citizens attending College Beach Weekend tell 10 On Your Side this is the largest police presence they’ve seen since attending the annual event.

“This is definitely the most police activity I’ve seen,” said Kwame Appeiah, a frequent attendee of College Beach Weekend.

But Appeiah doesn’t necessarily think the increase in police will keep away crime. “I mean some might see too much police authority as a threat and feel the need to act out,” he said.

Others say while there is more police at the Oceanfront, they don’t feel threatened. Terreoo Huff, another citizen at College Beach Weekend, told 10 On Your Side the police were interacting with citizens and making them feel more comfortable.

Below are the current statistics from Virginia Beach police, as of 3:15 a.m. on Sunday. We’ll continue to update them as they come in.
