SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Three people, including two firefighters, were treated for injuries after officials say a detached garage caught fire at a Suffolk home Monday morning.

City officials said in a news release Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews were called to the 100 block of Five Mile Road, off Godwin Boulevard, around 9:30 a.m.

Responding units found a large detached garage on fire, along with two vehicles. The fire extended into the home and caused damage to a neighboring home due to the extensive heat of the flames, officials said.

Firefighters had the flames under control just before 10:30 a.m. Two adult residents were displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

Officials said a firefighter working between the house and the garage became trapped after a wall collapsed. She was quickly rescued by her fellow firefighters.

Officials said she and another firefighter were treated on scene before they were transported to Sentara Obici Hospital. On Tuesday, Suffolk officials said the female firefighter was home recovering, but would require additional medical follow-up.

A woman who lived at the home was taken to the hospital to be treated for a minor injury. Both she and one of the firefighters have since been treated and released. The other firefighter continues to be evaluated for her injuries, according to city officials.

Five Mile Road was closed until 11:30 a.m.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, however, they say it is not considered suspicious.
