PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Authorities say an investigation is underway after a written warning was found at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth Friday afternoon.
A U.S. Navy spokesperson said the message was discovered in a building in the shipyard’s industrial area around 1:15 p.m. Shipyard law enforcement and Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) are investigating.
The shipyard closed exterior gates for about an hour after the threat was found.
The exact nature of the threat was not disclosed.
NCIS is offering a $2,500 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the threat. Anyone with information is asked to call NCIS at 757-444-7327.
Friday’s incident comes several months after a threatening message found on a bathroom wall and reports of an active shooter prompted authorities to evacuate the area.
The active shooter reports were eventually deemed false.
A reward for information in that case was increased to $2,500 in late-March.
