PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating a homicide that happened Saturday morning in Portsmouth.

Just before 7:30 a.m. on February 18, police say they were alerted to a shooting in the 40 block of Gilmerton Avenue.

Officers arrived and located the victim, with fatal injuries. On Tuesday, police identified him as 23-year-old Tyre-a Irvon Mcpherson of Chesapeake.

In documents obtained by 10 On Your Side, numerous spent cartridge casings were found surrounding the victim indicating he was “shot at close range.”

A cell phone was also recovered from the victim. Investigators, who were able to reach family members of the victim, reported that Mcpherson was last seen leaving with unknown person(s) in a black vehicle around midnight of February 18, just hours before he was found dead.
