Crews responded to small fire at Wheelabrator Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Fire crews responded to a waste-to-energy facility Tuesday night after a fuel spill. 

Dispatch said that calls came in for a fire around 11:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of Elm Avenue. Crews arrived on scene shortly after.

At 12:50 a.m., first responders were still on scene at the Wheelabrator Portsmouth.

Officials have now said in a Facebook post that the building’s sprinkler system was able to hold the fire off until crews arrived. The fire was under control after 1 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

Dispatch has not confirmed if anyone was injured.
