Court docs: Man killed near Portsmouth school was shot during attempted robbery

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A man who was killed near an elementary school in Portsmouth last month was shot during an attempted robbery, court documents show.

Portsmouth Police said 25-year-old Vien Nguyen was shot and killed at the intersection of Peach Street and Portsmouth Boulevard on May 19.

Nguyen got out of his car in a parking lot around 1:30 p.m., and was approached by a man armed with a gun who tried to rob him. The 25-year-old was shot multiple times in the torso during an ensuing struggle, according to court documents.

Responding medics pronounced Nguyen dead at the scene.

The incident happened blocks away from Brighton Elementary School. A man who lives nearby said that the shooting happened in broad daylight shows just how much the neighborhood has changed over the last 15 years.

Police said a suspect was seen driving away from the scene.
