NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — WAVY has confirmed a pedestrian lost their foot after being hit by a train Monday evening in Norfolk.
It happened along the tracks at Newport Avenue at West 23rd Street, according to police dispatch. That’s in the Railroad District in Park Place.
Chopper 10 flew over the scene Monday night and saw emergency vehicles blocking the road.
Those who live in the apartments off the tracks, like Lorna Deleon, heard the commotion and sirens. Her back window faces the rail yard.
“I literally saw the lights and I was like oh something’s going on outside,” Deleon told 10 On Your Side.
Deleon said she felt awful when she found out a man lost his right foot and is confused about how the collision happened.
“That is so sad. I feel terrible,” Deleon stated, “you can hear the train from miles away when its coming and you can feel it too.”
Deleon walks across the tracks daily to run errands near her neighborhood.
“All the time because I go to Shelly’s Cafe over here,” Deleon said.
She tells us now she’s thinking twice after Monday’s horrific accident.
WAVY reached out to Norfolk Police and Norfolk Southern Monday, for more information. We will bring you more details on this incident as they become available.
