NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Norfolk Police say they took an 11-year-old into custody following a shooting that critically injured another juvenile Sunday evening.

Officers responded to the 400 block of Nicholson Street just after 6 p.m. and arrived to find a 17-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was sent to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Police took an 11-year-old boy into custody at the scene. The child has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a juvenile.

Following an inquiry by 10 On Your Side’s Hayley Milon, Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi issued this statement:

“This is an extremely serious case with an extremely serious set of facts…. I’m confident the court will order an evaluation of the child to determine if they’re mature enough to stand trial.”
