NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Old Dominion University Police say they are actively investigating a report of a sexual assault that occurred near campus.
According to an ODU Safety Alert, a woman reported to campus police that she was sexually assaulted by a man around 8:45 Friday night at 1065 W. 49th Street.
The suspect, who is reportedly known to the victim, was invited into a residence.
Police described the suspect as a college-aged male, who is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. He fled the area on foot.
No other details on the suspect have been released.
This is the second reported sexual assault on campus in less than a month’s span.
The first assault was in late September and reported to have happened in campus housing.
One young student, who asked to stay anonymous, says there may only be two reported, but she’s heard of much more.
“It’s been more than three like what y’all are hearing there been probably nine since school started,” she said.
But that’s not what she says is shocking
“I was more shocked to hear about it publicly, cause usually people are scared to you know come out about it,” she said.
The student told 10 On Your Side it doesn’t make her feel safe.
“I have to walk home by myself around three in the morning and I don’t feel safe like I’ll turn my head over my shoulder sometimes just walk fast try to hurry up and get to my dorm,” she said.
She wants to see sexual safety become more of a priority.
“I just want to say if someone has went through it or is going through it just speak out and let somebody know. I feel really sorry for the victims, that’s sad and I feel like no is no, like no girl should not go through that at all it doesn’t matter if they like the guy if they’re boyfriend girlfriend it does not matter,” the student explained.
If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual assault, you are encouraged to reach out to Old Dominion University resources.
