NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Two pet friendly shelters are planning to open up ahead of Hurricane Florence.
Both Bayview Rec Center and Berkley Community Center will open at noon on Wednesday, according to Congressman Scott Taylor, R-Virginia Beach, who toured one of the facilities on Monday afternoon.
“The potential here is for a very strong storm, that could stay here for a while and have devastating consequences for our area,” Taylor said. “I encourage my constituents to heed the warnings.”
The shelters will have some supplies on hand but those using them are encouraged to bring their own. Meals will be provided by Norfolk Public Schools.
As far as pets go, domestic animals only will be allowed, such as dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, rodents, or turtles that are traditionally kept in the home for pleasure rather than for commercial purposes, according to the city website. All pets must be able to travel in commercial carriers, and be housed in temporary facilities.
