NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate at the Norfolk City Jail died in the early morning hours of Wednesday after he appeared to suffer a medical episode, officials say.

The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office said in a news release a deputy found 56-year-old John McCall unresponsive. The jail’s in-house medical team responded around 1:31 a.m., while EMS arrived five minutes later.

The release said medics attempted life-saving measures on McCall, before he was pronounced dead just before 1:50 a.m.

McCall was being held at the jail without bond following his May 6 arrest for trespassing. The 56-year-old reportedly had a “chronic, existing medical condition” and was receiving treatment.

The release said an initial investigation found he suffered the episode moments before he was discovered by the deputy. There is no indication of foul play.
