NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A suspicious package inside an unoccupied home that forced the evacuation of 40 nearby homes Wednesday night was deemed safe.

The Norfolk Bomb Squad investigated for several hours at the house in the 3900 block of Peterson Street after getting a call around 6 p.m., and finally announced the device was no threat around 10:40 p.m.

All evacuated residents were being allowed to return to their homes, Norfolk-Fire Rescue said.

It’s still unclear what exactly the device was.
