NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk Police say a man has died after sustaining life-threatening injuries in a shooting Wednesday night.
Police are still looking for who shot and killed 63-year-old Norman Robinson Jr. around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
A neighbor’s Ring doorbell camera started recording right after Robinson was shot. Footage shows a Norfolk Police officer arriving on scene and doing everything he could, including chest compressions, to save Robinson’s life.
“I heard a boom, and the dog got up and ran,” a woman, who did not want WAVY.com to use her name, said.
“I said ‘What is that?’ It didn’t sound like gunfire, like ‘pow, pow, pow.’ So then I heard some noises out here, but it was my neighbors across the street, and when I saw a guy laying there I said ‘Oh my gosh. Someone got shot.’”
On Wednesday night, police kept WAVY reporters back from the scene, but thanks to Ring video here’s what happened: Ring video starts recording at 9:32 p.m. after Robinson is already shot. The neighbor who lives in the house heard a gunshot came out, and saw the man in the street.
“What I saw when I got up was the fact those two guys were out there with him, and they were touching his neck to see if he was breathing or whatever, and one of them called police,” the woman told 10 On Your Side.
Around 9;40 p.m., emergency personnel and police show up and a police officer starts doing chest compressions. The video shows a valiant effort on part of a Norfolk Police officer to save Robinson’s life.
Watching the chest compressions on Robinson brought back painful memories for the woman 10 On Your Side spoke with.
“What really bothered me as far as this, I’m so sorry it happened, but I lost my husband three years ago and the way they were pumping him [Robinson] just brought it all back to me,” she said.
Robinson was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, but later died, police said Thursday morning.
Investigators would not comment on the case, but walked the neighborhood looking for clues — including more doorbell camera video.
“I got the Ring, the cops came and got my phone. The officer linked it to their office, and could pull off the stuff up from it,” the neighbor said.
Robinson’s son came to the scene to see where his dad died, but he didn’t want to publicly share his feelings at this time.
10 On Your Side asked the neighbor if she’s had any trouble in the neighborhood before.
“No, not like that… It does surprise me… Right here. We’ve never seen nothing like this before. We’ve never had anything through here like this.”
