NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The two suspects at the center of a murder case involving a Norfolk Wawa employee are speaking out from jail.
“It is killing me inside, still being the fact that I know that this lady lost her life for no reason,” said suspect Shonquial Hamlin.
Hamlin, 21, says he regrets what happened at the Wawa over the weekend. He says he was hanging out with his friend, 20-year-old Andre Brinkley, when they went to the store to get a bite to eat.
“We are standing there just talking, and I was just wondering why we didn’t go into Wawa yet,” Hamlin added.
Hamlin tells 10 On Your Side that’s when he noticed Helena Stiglets walk to her car.
“Me and her, we talk every time I go into Wawa,” Hamlin said. “She is a real nice lady, like honestly. She is a real nice lady.”
Hamlin says she got in her car and when he looked up, Brinkley was holding her at gunpoint.
“I was like ‘bro what are you doing right now?'” Hamlin asked Brinkley. “What are you doing? He wasn’t trying to hear nothing I was saying. It was like he wasn’t hearing my voice at all.”
Hamlin went to say that he had no idea there was going to be a robbery, and even worse a murder.
“I was like ‘bro please do not hurt this lady,'” Hamlin said. “I begged him. I begged him not to hurt this lady.”
Stiglets was shot and killed. Hamlin says Brinkley fired two shots.
“She was looking in my eyes basically wanting me to help her so bad, but there isn’t much you can do when you have a gun that’s fully loaded and the minute you jump, that’s your life,” Hamlin added.
Hamlin admits he should have done more, but says Brinkley threatened his life if he said anything.
“It is a shame,” Andre Brinkley said. “I’m really innocent. I work and I go to school. It is a shame. I’m going to have to spend a couple of months in here until they find out who really did it.”
Brinkley didn’t want to talk about his case. He said he didn’t even know Hamlin.
“I will say it in front of everybody — I didn’t murder anybody,” Hamlin added.
Both Hamlin and Brinkley are charged with second degree murder, carjacking and robbery. They will have preliminary hearings July 22.
