NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A woman is facing charges in Newport News after she was allegedly seen throwing a rabbit in the air and later resisted arrest, officials say.
Newport News spokesperson Kim Lee said Animal Control responded to a call Wednesday afternoon about a woman who was throwing the rabbit as well as putting it in her mouth, in her shirt and in her pants.
Lee said Animal Control called Newport News Police for help after the woman refused to turn over the rabbit. Animal Control was eventually able to obtain the rabbit as well as a container that held three tropical fish.
According to a police report, a responding officer saw the woman, 29-year-old Melanie Rose Hughes, place an alcoholic beverage container in a plastic bag on the sidewalk and detected a strong odor of alcohol.
Hughes refused to comply with the officer and attempted to get away as the officer struggled to detain her, the report said.
The officer was eventually able to detain Hughes and place her in a patrol vehicle, where she continued to kick the inside of the vehicle on the way to being booked, the report said.
Animal Control charged Hughes with animal cruelty, obstruction of justice and interference with an Animal Control Officer.
Police charged Hughes with obstruction of justice, intentionally preventing a law enforcement officer from lawfully making an arrest, drinking in public and drunk in public.
