Video shows officers with guns drawn on I-64 in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va (WAVY) — Authorities stopped a vehicle on Interstate 64 West in Newport News following a chase Friday morning that started in Hampton.

Hampton Police said the chase started when an officer saw a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Magruder Boulevard around 8:45 a.m.

The officer activated their emergency lights and tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver kept going on to Hampton Roads Center Parkway.

Police said the driver entered I-64, traveling in the right direction. Virginia State Police assisted in the chase and were able to stop the driver near J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.  

A video from a WAVY viewer showed officers at the scene with guns drawn. Another video showed officers taking one person into custody.

Authorities have not identified any suspects or announced charges in connection to the incident.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said the incident caused delays on the westbound side I-64. The west right shoulder was closed in the area.

Traffic cameras showed flashing lights from emergency vehicles stopped along the highway’s shoulder. Drivers were able to move by the scene, but traffic was heavy.
