Seniors at Newport News' An Achievable Dream HS surprised with Chromebooks

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- 53 high school seniors at An Achievable Dream Middle and High School got a special gift to make their holidays a little more special.

They originally thought they were coming to hear the vice president of customer care with Cox Communications, Bruce Crooks, talk about STEM careers.

But instead Crooks directed them to go outside.

"Mainly we brought you out here for a different reason. What we're going to do, because were very proud of you guys and want you to continue your education and have the best of the best, each of you are going to get a brand new Dell Chromebook," said Crooks.

Crooks says Cox Communications has worked with An Achievable Dream in the past.

An Achievable Dream is a partnership between Newport News Public Schools, the City of Newport News and local businesses.

They give students who are at risk of failure in school because of socioeconomic factors, a chance to succeed in their futures.

"Cox is very committed to the community making sure especially for the education side with our students we want to make sure were providing them with the tools to be successful in the future as they continue to grow in their careers," Crooks said.

Senior Tamara Allen says she has a plan after high school.

"Once I finish high school I plan on going to a four year college or university where I will study political science, criminal justice in order to help prison reform in our country," Allen said.

And this gift will help her achieve her dreams.

"It really makes you feel like there are people in the community to support you, I feel more prepared for college now that I have a Chromebook," Allen said.
