Newport News man pleads guilty to federal weapons charge related to drug trafficking

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man who pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal charge of possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking will be sentenced October 2.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said investigators stopped Leo Vaughn, 37, of Newport News and found large quantities of marijuana and cash. When investigators searched his home, they found several pounds of weed, guns and more than $70,000 in cash.

The guilty plea carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum of life in prison.
