Hampton man facing marijuana, concealed weapon charges in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- A Hampton man is facing charges in Newport News after officers found a concealed firearm and marijuana during a traffic stop late Wednesday night.

Newport News police said officers noticed a vehicle with a headlight out in the area of Bland Boulevard and Campbell Road around 11:45 p.m., and pulled over the driver.

While speaking with the driver and a passenger -- identified as 20-year-old Shawn Gainey, of Hampton -- officers noticed a smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Police said Gainey made several movements toward his waistline and behind his back when officers asked him to get out of the vehicle.

A black fanny pack then fell out as officers opened the door, police said. The firearm and drugs were found in a search of the fanny pack.

Police charged Gainey with possession of marijuana and concealed weapon.
