NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — One man was killed and another person was injured Tuesday morning in an industrial accident at a construction site.
Dispatchers received a call around 7:45 a.m. to the area of City Center at Oyster Point.
Later, the Newport News Fire Department said in a tweet that they responded to 700 block of Lakefront Commons.
Two people were taken to local hospitals.
One of those victims did not make it. Police later identified him as 42-year-old Jose Ramos-Enriquez of McGaheysville, Virginia.
The second person’s injuries were considered minor, police said.
The W.M. Jordan Company said in a news release the incident happened at the construction of the new headquarters for Ferguson Enterprises.
Crews broke ground on the $82.8 million high rise building in June 2018.
The release said several pieces of steel fell from the second floor, hitting two workers who were employed by a steel subcontractor.
The company said in the release it is “deeply saddened by this event, and extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and coworkers affected by this tragedy.”
The Newport News Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident. OSHA will conduct a separate investigation.
People who live nearby were saddened to hear about the incident.
“It’s so sad about the death. I hate to hear that,” said Ed Saunders. “That just goes to show in a moment’s time, in the twinkling of an eye, your whole life can change. His family, their life has changed.”
Kevin DePew heard the crash of steel while he was on his morning run.
He said, “I didn’t really think all that much about it and then a couple of laps later I started seeing the ambulances pulling up… Then I saw three ambulances and it began to dawn on me, you know, the gravity of the situation.”
A family friend created a GoFundMe account to help with funeral expenses.
