PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A 19-year-old man was shot and killed Monday morning in Portsmouth.
It happened just before 10 a.m. in the 1400 block of Portsmouth Boulevard. Police blocked the road from Oak Street to Beech Street and dozens of friends and family members stood nearby watching police investigate.
Police have identified the victim as Melvin Moses.
On Tuesday, police released images of a Chevrolet Malibu that was seen on surveillance video driving around the area of Highland Avenue and Beech Street before, during and after the shooting. In an update Wednesday, they said the vehicle was no longer of interest in the investigation.
At this time, no suspect information is available..
Michael Tanner, a close family friend, says the man was young. Police confirmed he was 19 years old, but have not released his identity.
“It’s a hard pill to swallow,” said Tanner. “He was just with us this weekend.”
Witnesses tell 10 On Your Side they heard rounds of shots while getting ready for the day.
Tanner says the shootings must stop in the city.
“Most people should understand what a gun is used for. A gun is not used to threaten someone, these are weapons designed to take another person’s life. It’s not anything to play with. It’s not anything to joke with. Y’all need to get a grip on it now.”
He’s worried the younger generation won’t make it to their 60s like him.
“I’m here I’m 60 years old, y’all supposed to be trying to get where I’m at.”
Joan Harley was driving through the area when she saw the large scene. She said she had to pull over because her great-grandson lives nearby. Harley is angry to learn the victim’s age.
“Pray for the family. I just ask everybody to get on the knees and start praying. Ask the Lord to take these guns away from these young people.”
