Driver charged with DUI manslaughter after accident on I-64 in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) -- A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 near Cunningham Drive Friday night.

According to Virginia State Police, the accident happened around 8:40 p.m.

A Toyota Corolla with four occupants had stopped on the left shoulder of the interstate for unknown reasons and was trying to merge back into traffic as a Toyota Tacoma was moving into the left lane.

According to troopers, the pickup truck hit the back of the sedan. Three of the four people in the sedan were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Troopers say 19-year-old Kelly Anne Tabaniag of Newport News, who was in the backseat of the sedan, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, 24-year-old Micah Darren Ramon Weldin of Hayes, and his passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to State Police.

Alcohol contributed to the accident, troopers say. Weldin has been charged with DUI manslaughter and reckless driving.
