HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — 10 On Your Side is looking ahead to a special conference coming up in Hampton. It’s the first of its kind on the Peninsula and geared toward helping small business owners.
Owning and running a business isn’t easy.
“You could study business, but it’s totally different when you’re open and operating,” said Lakesha Brown Renfro, who owns Mango Mangeaux in Hampton.
She got her start as an event planner, then went on the show “Shark Tank,” and now runs a few businesses in the Phoebus area of Hampton. “We took the money that we made from Shark Tank and invested it back into the community,” Brown Renfro said,
Next week, she will attend the “Grow Your Sales Small Business Conference” at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.
“There are so many different resources out there, sometimes its hard to know who does what, how and where they are, so we can bring all of those resources into one place under one roof for the business owners,” said Erica Spencer, who is the minority business coordinator for the City of Hampton. She asked the state’s Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity to bring the conference to the peninsula for the first time.
Spencer said, “It’s going to be awesome what information they get from meeting the prime contractors, to know how to become a sub, to meeting the Hampton procurement team to seeing how to do business with Hampton.”
The conference will be a one-stop-shop for everything you need to know about how to run a business.
“It’s very important for people to be able to have an opportunity to speak with people who have that expertise,” said Brown Renfro. “Nothing is as wonderful as serving the people who you live, eat and work around.”
About 300 people have already registered for the conference.
It’s taking place Wednesday, June 6 from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.
The conference is free, but you must register to attend. You can register on this website.
