NORFOLK, Va (WAVY) — A woman who inspired many in Hampton Roads was honored today when a local catering company awarded a scholarship in her name.
Four aspiring, female chefs battled it out in the kitchen at the Culinary Institute of Virginia for the $2,500 check.
Yummy Goodness Catering came up with the idea to honor the late Beth Prever.
Prever was a Towne Bank executive who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for ALS, a disease she was later diagnosed with. She passed away in August of last year.
Prever also provided inspiration and referrals that helped their Yummy Goodness grow their business.
“She would guide us along the way and say ‘maybe you shouldn’t do it like that, maybe you should do it like this.’ We became a better business because of Beth and we owe a lot to her our business grew very fast because of word of mouth because of the support she gave us.” said Kelly McMoran, Executive Chef at Yummy Goodness Catering Company.

Each dish made during the scholarship competition was unique and delicious, but the judges selected Chef Jamyce Freeman’s Moroccan chicken with couscous and a Vietnamese spring roll appetizer as the winning dish.
Freeman, a wife and mother of three, says she can really use the money to help pay for tuition for three members of her family members.
The other young chefs were awarded $250 each by the Culinary Institute of Virginia.
Yummy Goodness plans to offer this scholarship every year.
