CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Chesapeake firefighters responded to a mulch fire in the Bowers Hill section of the city late Sunday night.
According to a Fire Department spokesman, a passerby noticed smoke and called the fire department. Crews responded to the scene at VICO Construction Corp. in the 1000 block of Enterprise Circle around 11 p.m..
Firefighters are working with VICO Construction to extinguish the fire. They are using excavators to dig through the pile while firefighters spray it with water.
The fire is not a risk to any nearby homes or buildings, according to the Fire Department.
Officials say the debris that is burning is from land clearing operations on the I-64 project.
Mulch and wood chip fires are common due to the heat created from decomposing materials, according to the fire department.
