CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A woman was taken to the hospital after her SUV was struck by another SUV that went airborne Thursday morning in Chesapeake.

It happened at S. Military Highway and Route 17 around 9:22 a.m.

Chesapeake police say a man driving a gray Toyota SUV was heading west on S. Military Highway when he went off the right side of the road and struck a small embankment. The vehicle went airborne and hit the woman’s tan Buick SUV, which was stopped at a red light on Route 17 (George Washington Highway).

The woman suffered possible life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital, police say. The man suffered minor injuries and was also transported.

Photos from the scene show both vehicles flipped on the side of the road, with the Toyota flipped upside down.

The Chesapeake Police Crash Investigations Team is investigating.
