HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Students getting ready to head back to school made their way into the chairs of hair stylists at Hair Envy in Hampton.
They were able to choose a haircut or hair style
“I got mine flat ironed,” said Brooklynn Roberts.
Owner April Cofield says each of the 96 kids they worked with today got their cut for free.
She says it’s something she’s done for more than a decade.
“It’s important for us to do it because we’re giving back to our community,” said Cofield.
She says it not only makes them feel good on the outside, but on the inside too.
“It’s nice to build the confidence for their first day of school,” Cofield said.
“It makes me feel happy and excited about school,” Roberts said.
“It gives everyone a feeling of happiness,” said student Dominique McLean.
Each kid who got a hair cut also got a book bag full of supplies, and a picture to remember the day.
But Cofield says this day is more than a haircut, its a way to interact with the kids and try to set them up for success in life.
“It creates a huge bond. It lets them know their community is behind them, it’s good for them to see adults interacting with each other that’s not arguing. They see us getting along for the better good of our kids,” she said.
