NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — DeShawn Johnson is a father of seven, and currently recovering at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after being struck by a car while walking to work.
According to police, he was hit last week by the car as he was trying to cross Indian River Road, just east of South Military Highway. Police say the driver stayed on scene.
Johnson has serious injuries, and his sister says he’s already been through a handful of surgeries.
“They had to sew his ear back on. Wednesday, my brother had spinal surgery, he’s still not able to walk. On Thursday, my brother had surgery on his arm, his arm is broken in two places, his knee cap is broken, he has broken ribs and he has blood around his heart” said his sister, Sheri Johnson.
His sister says it’s been hard on his children.
“They don’t understand how you can go from walking me to school or walking me to my events, and now you can’t get out the bed,” she said.
Sheri says DeShawn has no insurance, and is trying to figure out how to pay medical bills and care for his children.
“Whatever we have is going to go toward taking care of my brother’s kids and helping with hospital bills, and right now we really are in a need,” Sheri Johnson said.
Sheri says people have started to raise money for him through GoFundMe pages.
She’s also trying to raise awareness about something else: crosswalks and the electronic signs that signal it’s OK to cross.
“If you look here, there’s no crosswalk for anyone to go across the street,” she said.
She says people need to cross the road in this area a lot, and want the road to be safer, and she’s looking into contacting someone about it.
