HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — There are many events happening this weekend and on Monday, Jan. 21 to remember and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

ON THE PENINSULA
MLK Day of Service Food Drive | Jan. 21 | Newport News | 9 a.m to 1 p.m. | Virginia Peninsula Foodbank
Mayor McKinley Price, Delegate Marcia Price, Sheriff Gabe Morgan and others will be at the Foodbank to accept donations from the community. Citizens, organizations, churches, community groups, school groups, and others are encouraged to collect nonperishable food items.
Hampton Heroes Memorial Plaza Dedication | Jan. 21 | Hampton | 1 p.m. | Outside of the Hampton Roads Covention Center
The Hampton Heroes Plaza will honor those who embodied the spirit of doing for others, like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Four stories of pivotal times in Hampton’s history will be told.
ON THE SOUTHSIDE
Songs for a Dreamer | Jan. 20 | 7 p.m. | Second Calvary Baptist Church
This multi-media concert will feature the musicians of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, as well as performances from NSU’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble and more.
35th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Leaders Breakfast | Jan. 21 | 8 a.m. | Ted Constant Convocation Center
The breakfast, created to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., recognizes and presents awards to those dedicated to community service/volunteerism, education, employment, health, and housing.
MLK Ceremony | Jan. 21 | 10 a.m. | Attucks Theatre
Doors open at 9 a.m. Following the ceremony, the public is invited to march to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony.
