Little Creek-Fort Story deputy commander passes away

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The deputy commander of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story passed away Wednesday at his home, base officials say. He was 61.

Lt. Col. John W. Penree was an officer in the U.S. Army for 43 years.

“Penree was an exceptional officer, a friend, a father, a husband and a man of faith,” Capt. Joey Frantzen, the base’s commander said in a statement.

Penree, a native of Utica, New York, joined the Army in 1974, joining the active duty ranks in 1999. He was deployed several times between 2000 and 2006 to places including Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq.

“(Penree) represented the heart and soul of our Army Component here at the Joint Base whose breadth of experience, knowledge and personal demeanor truly elevated the professionalism in all of us.  He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.”

Penree reported to Little Creek-Fort Story in April 2015 as the base’s deputy commander. Officials say he leaves behind a wife and six children.
