Isle of Wight wins softball state title, ends Greenbrier Christian’s decade-long run

NEWPORT NEWS (WAVY) – Greenbrier Christian put the game-tying runner on third, and the championship-winning run on second base, but Isle of Wight pitcher Mackenzie Wooten kept her composure and delivered in the clutch.

Greenbrier Christian’s Karly Packert popped up to center field, Isle of Wight senior Kaylin Manner caught the final out, and the Chargers ended the Gators 9-year championship run with a 4-3 win.

“This title means everything,” said Isle of Wight head coach Jill Edwards, who first took over as head coach five years ago. “These kids have worked hard. I’m so proud of them, I love them like they were my own kids. It means a lot.”

The Chargers took a 4-1 lead when junior first baseman Maddie Roundtree boomed a solo home run out to centerfield.

With a championship pedigree, the Gators responded. An RBI triple from freshman second baseman Rachel Castine made it a 4-2 game. Emily Phillips cut the deficit to one with an RBI single that sent Castine home.
