DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A breach in security allowed an inmate at the Dare County Detention Center to escape early Saturday morning.

Dare County Sheriff J.D. Doughtie said inmate Zachary Barksdale escaped from the detention center around 1:20 a.m. He was placed into custody a short time later at 2:40 a.m., without incident.

The preliminary investigation revelaed a breach in security gave Barksdale the opportunity to exit the facility on foot.

Barksdale has been charged with fleeing the custody of a county confinement facility, with further charges pending the outcome of the investigation.

There were no injuries to anyone involved in this incident.

Officers from Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Manteo, the North Carolina Highway Patrol, and the Dare County EMS Med-Flight crew assisted in the search.
