VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate with the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office Workforce program was hit by an SUV Thursday afternoon.

The sheriff’s office confirmed the inmate was injured while working at the intersection of Nimmo Parkway and Upton Drive.

Virginia Beach police said officers responded to the area around 2:30 p.m.

The inmate was trying to cross the street when he was hit by a vehicle. He was wearing safety equipment, including a fluorescent yellow traffic safety vest, at the time, according to police.  The inmate was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police said Thursday it did not appear as if charges would be filed.
