SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate at Western Tidewater Regional Jail was pronounced dead after being in medical distress on Friday.

Officials say a jail officer conducting security rounds requested medical staff at 6:32 a.m., as 37-year-old Michael Hoffler “appeared to be in medical distress.” Medical staff began treating the inmate and called the Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue, which responded to the scene.

After several minutes on the scene, Suffolk EMS said Hoffler had died.

Hoffler was brought to the facility on October 15, and was charged with felony violation of probation. He was originally charged with possession of heroin, according to court records.

The incident is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Department and the Western Tidewater Regional Jail is conducting an administrative review.
