Incoming chief attends ‘Chief on the Go’ event in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Newport News Police Department on Tuesday hosted a special “Chief On the Go” event.

10 On Your Side was at the Costco parking lot on Jefferson Avenue as community members gathered to get a little personal with the chiefs, new and old.

Tuesday’s event featured acting chief Michael Grinstead — and new incoming chief Steve Drew.

“The goal of what we’re trying to do is get the community engaging with the police department and the same thing with the police department engaging with the community,” Drew said.

Drew was announced as the new chief of Newport News police in late-May. He has served as deputy police chief of Richmond since April 2015 — and will officially start his new role July 2.

“I want to build trust and create transparency with our community, our citizens and I think the more we interact with each other and have those conversations, the more we’re visually out working together having good conversations about issues in Newport News, the better we’ll decrease crime and build better partnerships and relationships.”

At the event, residents had the opportunity to check out the department’s command bus, BearCat vehicle — and their new drone.
