In ’36th Street Bang Squad’ case, 9 plead not guilty

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Nine people pleaded not guilty Monday to federal crimes involving a Newport News street gang called the 36th Street Bang Squad.

The charges stem from alleged racketeering and drug trafficking crimes allegedly committed by members of the 36th Street Bang Squad in southern Newport News. Those crimes include the 2015 murders of three people: Dwayne Parker, Domingo Davis and Jada Richardson.

Members of the 36th Street Bang Squad also allegedly attempted to murder seven other people, including rival gang members, according to documents filed in the U.S. Eastern District Court of Virginia.

Charged are:

  • Martin L. Hunt: Conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; attempt and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; racketeering conspiracy; attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; murder in aid of racketeering activity; use of a firearm resulting in death; murder in aid of racketeering activity; and use of a firearm resulting in death.
  • Xavier Greene: Racketeering conspiracy; attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; murder in aid of racketeering activity; use of a firearm resulting gin death; murder in aid of racketeering activity; use of a firearm resulting in death; murder in aid of racketeering activity; use of a firearm resulting in death.
  • Corey R. Sweetenburg: Conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; attempted assault with a dangerous weapon in the aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; attempt and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; racketeering conspiracy; murder in aid of racketeering activity; use of a firearm resulting in death; murder in aid of racketeering activity; use of a firearm resulting in death.
  • Deshaun Richardson: Racketeering conspiracy; conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute marijuana and cocaine base; possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking; murder in aid of racketeering activity; use of a firearm resulting in death; murder in aid of racketeering activity; and use of a firearm resulting in death.
  • Eric Nixon: Racketeering conspiracy; attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; false statement during firearm purchase.
  • Giovani Douglas: Attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; and possession and discharge of a gun in furtherance of a crime of violence.
  • Raymond Palmer: Racketeering conspiracy; attempted assault with a dangerous weapon; and possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; false statement during firearm purchase.
  • Anthony Acklin: Conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute marijuana and cocaine base; maintaining a drug involved premises; and possession of a gun in furtherance of drug trafficking.
  • Ryan Taybron: Racketeering conspiracy; attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity; possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence; conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute marijuana and cocaine base; maintaining a drug involved premises; and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

All men are in custody, except Palmer and Acklin who currently have warrants out for their arrest.

Also charged are members of Ryan Taybron’s family. His grandmother, Phyliss Taybron, sister, Sade Taybron, and mother, Melissa Taybron, are accused of tampering with a witness who testified against Ryan Taybron in connection to a November 2015 shooting.

Melissa Taybron is also accused of maintaining a drug-involved premises.
