Icy spots on the roads as temperatures hit below freezing overnight

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Icy patches could be issue on the roads for some people’s morning commute.

10 On Your Side photojournalist LaVoy Harrell got video overnight of several slick spots in the area.

One of these spots is on Effingham Street, right in front of the YMCA near the Downtown Tunnel. A police car was on the scene warning drivers to slow down.

Some of the spots are black ice, and are therefore hard to see. Temperatures plunged to below the freezing mark overnight, causing water on the roads to freeze.

Meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler says temperatures will rise above freezing later today.

Water was left behind on area roadways following a rainy start to the week and a snowy morning on Tuesday. The snow was over by the afternoon, and had largley melted  before the night.
