Heavy fire damages home, displaces family of five

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A family of five is without a home after heavy fire and smoke damaged their home in the Denbigh section of the city Tuesday afternoon. 

Fire crews were dispatched just before 4 p.m. for a two-story home on fire in the 300 block of Circuit Lane. Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the front of the house and began an aggressive offensive attack, conducting search and rescue operations. 

The Newport News Fire Department reported that smoke detectors were operating when they arrived on scene. 

The fire was under control by 4:13 p.m. 

The home suffered fire damage in the room where it started, and heat and smoke damage throughout. 

One resident was evaluated on scene, but did not need to be taken to a hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported. 

Red Cross was called to help two adults and three children with temporary living arrangements. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
